Caribou Hunting

Has anyone ever Caribou hunted in Labrador? I was just invited by my wife's cousin to go Caribou hunting in Labrador. He is a licensed guide, and resident, but I was searching on the internet for a license for a non-resident, and it seems they are only available through an outfitter. Does anyone know if this is true, or is their a loop-hole?
I always wanted to go to NFLD for a moose hunting, but if I can simply buy a Caribou license, this seems too good to be true. All I have to do is drive to his house in Wabush, and everything is taken care of from there.
If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know.

To hunt big game (moose, bear or caribou) in Newfoundland and/or Labrador you do have to go through an outfitter. The outfitters buy the non-resident tags and transfer them to their clients. You cannot buy one "over the counter" so to speak. Here is the link for the regulations:

Thanks sam, that's the same kind of info that I had found. I just wasn't sure if that's cast in stone, or just what they led us to believe. If he knows the right guy, there may still be a way around it, without paying the outfitter prices. (I'm not saying illegal or anything, but maybe he's got a buddy who's an outfitter who can hook me up) Regardless, there has to be a way. But wouldn't that be an awesome hunt, for the cost of gas to get there and a license?

I am from Labrador, and the Northern part of Newfoundland, and it is an awesome hunt. If you can get there and do it for just the cost of travel you would get the hunt of a lifetime!!

I can only imagine the experience. I was so excited when he asked me to come up, but the wind was knocked out of my sails when I found out about the outfitter part. Regardless of a license or not, I'm still going to go for a hunt with him. A good time and a good hunt doesn't always require me shooting something.(But it sure would be nice) He runs a trap line that is 150 miles long, just working on that with him would be an experience. My wife is from Lab City. Her parents both worked for IOC....but I guess from what I'm told about the area, most everyone worked for IOC.

If you get the opportunity to go Jonesie, make sure you go!

Not alot of Caribou around anymore. We saw a few last year, but decided to shoot them with a camera. The outfitter we hunted with had 2 Caribou tags, only managed to fill one....

Jonesie;
I've heard there may not be a caribou hunt in Labrador this year.
If you do go you might not get a stag with antlers............most of them are dropped by the time the herd reaches Labrador. I have seen a quite a few in the early part of the season with 'horns' but the first stags aren't the best eating. Later on like in February and March the 'baldheaded' stags are rolling fat.
There isn't much "hunting" to getting caribou. You just locate the tracking collars on the Quebec Wildlife website and go shoot the one(s) you want.
Note: Locals have a 2 animal license and we can transfer it to another Labrador hunter to get animals for us.
Best of luck.
