4700 in 2015 - 2300 in 2023 is very sharp decline and cut the population in half in just 8 yrs , time to look at this hunt in very different ways on all sides . Time for tag system on both sides of the hunt and MANDATORY registry for all parties hunting .

Instead of costing 7900.00 dollars per culled moose, I for one would have gladly payed $500.00 for a once in a lifetime opportunity to harvest a moose in C.B. during the so call hyperabundant period.

IMO that was the most incompetent, stupidest waste of a scarce wildlife resource and tax payer money I've heard of. Anyone that was involved should be ashamed.
As you said, many would have paid good money to participate in a small, controlled cull.

So who were these experts that said culls were needed. It shows how sad our wildlife is managed. Do nothing for the deer herd then abuse the moose.

I recall reading an article about the cull. I cannot remember exactly which agencies were involved but do remember that ariel (spelling?) survey said there was a boat load of moose in the highlands just before the cull. I think it was DNR and Parks Canada but I'm not sure at all. The moose were, supposedly, over-browsing the Acadian forest in that area so had to be thinned out. The next year though their survey said the moise population had dropped by some ridiculous amount, far, far more than the cull and hunting would have accounted for.
Personally, I believe someone involved screwed up royally in the original population estimates. But they will never admit that. They just don't talk about it!

I think you're right, Tony. I also think that when they raved about the huge numbers, potential poachers figured that they might as well go get one as well!
