Well...with the increased price of ammunition in general you can basically get copper ammo now for almost the same price and it is more available.
I know there was threads from years ago and many discussions on performance, price and availability.
Anybody have any updated thoughts on this topic?
I personally used copper ammo last year as it was the premium ammo I had on hand, accuracy was great, performance on game I dunno if there would have been a difference between copper and lead.
2 years ago, I was going to start buying copper, because with all the crying the eagle lady was doing, I thought lead bullets would be banned. I couldn't justify spending that money though when I had hundreds of rounds of lead bullets. I never did buy any, and you are right, they're pretty much on par with each other now. Don't hear much crying about the Eagles lately. There are tons of those around. We have lots just on our Lake.
I agree with the shortage of eagles. It seems this was one woman’s personal crusade as it seems to have lost steam since this lady has since passed away but it goes to show you the damage one person can do if they are able to get the right platform and enough people jump on the band wagon without properly checking out the facts themselves instead of just believing what is put in front of them.Facts and truths can easliy be distorted to back up any agenda one comes up with and that’s exactly the situation we are in with the liberals gun control agenda
I started shooting copper in my BAR (308win) about 10 years ago while living in Ontario. There was no particular reason other than they were fairly new and I thought I would give them a whirl. I was paying $35.00 a box for Barnes Vortex 150gr TTSX which was about double the price of plain old Winchester power point. They shot really well through my gun so I ended up sticking with them. I've taken quite a few deer with them and they performed excellent...most were Bang and Dead where they stood. Shot placement helps with that...lol. The only one that ran only went 30yds or so before falling over.
I stocked up before moving back to the Cape, got a nice little supply that'll last my life time. At $80.00 a box at todays prices (Cabela's) it would be a hard pill to swallow if you were looking to make the switch, but I guess all brands of premium ammo are pricey. I also shoot the Barnes TEZ all copper projectile in my muzzleloader and have no complaints about it's performance either. I've had nothing but good luck with copper...hopefully that continues.
Don't have a lot of experience with them other than reloaded a few different ones when they came out and they may be even better now since that must be 10 years ago or so
My experience performance depends on the make of rifle it's rifling etc and one has to keep the speed over 2000
If not terrible accuracy In the end they kill so if one likes them fill their boots but never will they give the bag flop of lead at lower speeds and the issue I have seen with guys is if they use 150g lead they think they should use 150 grains of copper in their reloads and that is where the accuracy issues develop Put a 150g of each side by side and you will see why
Good read here on them IMO
I did a fair bit of testing with them for my 6.5x55 Tikka when I first bought it...just to see what the hype was all about. I've never had to try sooooo many different loads and configurations with 2 types/weights of copper bullets in my life to make something work !!!! Best group I ever got was 1 3/4 inches...with 2 inch being the norm. Went back to my Nosler 120 gr BT's and the guns pet load...4 bullets in a ragged hole !!
I never bothered with them again...for any rifle !!
Pretty much seen the same but again they were new then so many be got better When they make a bullet that performs for me like a nosler partition I will buy it
All I ever reloaded for hunting big game and only lost one deer over the years ( and a 3006 to boot Sadly found it the next weekend about 75 yards away under a downed spruce tree roots and no way could it be seen with out the crows
Like you my moose never went 25 yards two dropped on the spot and one ran
We were raisaed on them All the old man ever believed in and they were free in his stash

Tested the copper bullets as well as I can see some benefits (ie less fragments). Couldn’t get the accuracy grouping out of my Tikka 7 mm rem mag that I wanted. Even tried then out of my .308 without the results I wanted. Still have 1/2 box sitting on my shelf.
…… and I agree the Nosler Partition 160 gr. for my 7 mm rem mag are at the top of my list for accuracy and kill potential for moose. Trouble is ya just can‘t find them.

Yes I don't see copper anywhere's, normal ammo is scarce enough.
Ive killed 2 caribou & a deer with copper - all were through & through. This was several years ago and the designs have changed since then - at least thats what I'm seeing.
pretty good discussion about copper bullets at a gun course last weekend.
IMO, this is a great explanation about both lead & copper bullets.
