Well seems like all the animals ive departed over the years are coming back to bite me. Been having wierd pain and swelling in my finger for afew months. 2 docs and a surgen later im told its gout. Apperantly venison is bad for gout and thats 60% of my diet. The ironic thing is it is only bothering my trigger finger.....

Unfortunately it is one thing I know too well. Been battling it for over 10 years but mine started in my big toe and now a flair up is pretty much 1/2 of the foot and now can hit either foot when for years it was just one and for some reason my doc would not put me on the allopurinol pill to help prevent it until last fall when I was getting like 5 -6 events a year
Flair ups went from a few hours to 10 days and so bad I could not walk or let anything touch my foot and I found out later it is more prone to happen with people with high blood pressure or diabetic and I am both
As they told you it is a uric acid build up from purines and only you will have to find out what foods you can get away with eating that has it but most red meats of any kind for me is a no no yet I can eat hamburger go figure or steak sometimes A roast or stew and within hours I am in pain even with the pill and a little bit of liver only more than 2 small pieces pain Forget any booze for me especially beer those days are gone
Not to scare you but I have seen some real ugly fingers on people that didnot try to control it twisted up and huge joints since it is a form of arthritis to the point the finger cannot bend and one finger is just the start then two and so on Not showing anything here but google gout in the finger and look at some images and you will see one has to control it
If you have not looked here is the foods that normally cause it and if like me some you will be able to eat and still drink others are gone for you unless you like pain and I have found once it starts the events get worse and worse over the years and over a larger area

Not my words
Purines are also found in certain foods, including red meat and organ meats, such as liver. Purine-rich seafood includes anchovies, sardines, mussels, scallops, trout and tuna. Alcoholic beverages, especially beer, and drinks sweetened with fruit sugar (fructose) promote higher levels of uric acid.

Sorry to hear but no fun when it flairs up from any one here that gets it knows exactly what I mean and how painful it can be I remember one event in a chair for 10 days could not put my foot on the floor it was so bad Also not on the list is anything made with tomatoes some people that is the only thing that will trigger a flair up
All the best with your new ongoing battle Growing old is no fun
Cheers

I know someone fairly young who has it, but they aren't the best at taking care of themselves, rich foods and beer :) lay off it if that's what's happening :)

I think many would call that karma.
Joking aside, it can be painful as hell. I had a couple episodes of it in my foot around 35 years ago. As Joe said, couldn't stand to have anything touch my foot for a few hours! Luckily it has never come back.

IMO kidney stone was the only pain I have had worse so far hours ?? mine started like that and then went to days and finally the last one over as week If not for those Prednisone she gave me I think I would be still in the chair but they are some bad crap and one cannot take many of those

I had a kidney stone a couple years ago and I agree it was worse than gout.
I am obviously very, very lucky it came and went so fast and then never came back!
I worked with a guy who limped constantly due to gout. Otherwise healthy mid thirties and not a big drinker.

Foods listed trigger it for sure but a lot of it is in your genes and one has to find out what triggers it in them since it is different in many. Like tomatoes is not even on the list and they especially in sauce or ketchup give a few people I know with it flare ups For some strange reason seems a lot of my friends that worked a long time underground get it also maybe all the dampness there god knows a few studies say it is the dust and we used tons of stone dust to keep the methane down and tons of sandstone in the mining process
My dad and one brother like me gets it bad other brother and sister is fine and they are the two that didnot work in the mines for any time
I had one stone also and sure don't want another :( Doc said I was lucky being a 10ga guy vs a 410 to pass it:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
not my words
Exposure to inorganic dusts, for example, silica dust, is one such occupational exposure that may be related to gout. Silica dust has been shown to activate the NLRP3 inflammasome,12 which is a key component of the inflammatory response to MSU crystals.13
