I just emailed this to my buddy Pete in NB. Just so we wouldn't duplicate anything. We'll be in the highlands all of next week...fishing and revamping our stands. This is typical of all our hunts or scouting trips to CB. We're generally 6 to 10 people and I cook for 20....you never know when you're going to have company!! And the left overs are iced up for lunch the next day...By the end of the week, there's quite a selection for lunch...!!

Every meal seen here is frozen and will be buried in ice (in a grey bin) until we reheat it. All of these meals require a minimum of cooking(boiling spaghetti..etc..) which is what you want when camping. No one wants to cook all day. At the same time, you don't want to eat hot dogs and sardines all week.

Pete normally brings all of the breakfast stuff:...bacon...eggs...pancake mix...homefries...bread for toast..etc.. We have a full breakfast every morning (usually includes trout)...We also make sure that we have plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Once we're set up for a week, we hate to waste time driving out for groceries so we try to have enough of everything, and ice to last at least a week.

Man that looks like some great meals. You guys eat well!

Just curious on a legal note...not that I think it would ever be an issue unless they the CO's wanted to stick you with something. Do you carry an extended permit to have that moose meat with you at that time of the year?

Our last trip down my uncle made chilli, it was literally a big pack of hamburger and cans of just about everything he could find. There were 6 of us and he FILLED one of those tall lobster/turkey boiler pots and cooked it outside. We ate it for 2 days and did it ever hit the spot. I like taking a few homemade lasagna's and lots of sandwich stuff.
Its hard to beat pancakes and sausage for breakfast too, easy to make and very little dirty disher...

...perhaps you should have a DNA sample and a copy of the Death Certificate with you as well..

..just to prove it was killed the year before...lol: ..then again..there's lots of denizens of the area that could have given you some moose to enjoy!

It would great to have you all, Kev...!!! And usually we have plenty of brew to wash all this down with...

Markus, Bob can check this out..., I was told by a game warden that anybody is allowed 15 Lbs of game meat without a permit at anytime during the year. We're going to be 9 people....Based on that assumption we should be allowed 135 Lbs. of meat...We're not even close to that...!!

Mecheng, I agree ..hard to beat pancakes and sausages for breakfast..That is definetly on our menu...

That would be great to know David. I know past a certain spring date, you need to have an extended permit for the meat in your freezer and it'd b nice to know if there's a small personal limit that falls outside that.

I'm very cautious of this because I hunt and fish so much that occasionally there's a jealous type of of person out there that puts together their own ideas of what's in your freezer. lol Once in ON I had a CO show up at my door and requested a freezer inspection because someone had claimed I had it full of fish. I invited him in and we did the search....and of course I had nothing in my freezer because where I fish 5 of the 7 days a week, I always ate fresh fish. But because I fish so much (99% C&R)...someone just assumed I was loading up my coolers everynight.

So...I'm very careful with whats in my freezer and the permits needed to have it.

Storage permit

8 (1) Where a moose has been killed under the authority of a moose hunting licence and Section 7 has been complied with, the Department shall issue to the moose hunting licence holder two copies of a storage permit authorizing that person to possess the carcass until July 31st of the year next following.

Subsection 8(1) amended: O.I.C. 93-487, N.S. Reg. 85/93; O.I.C. 1999-366, N.S. Reg. 77/99.

(2) The Department may renew a storage permit after July 31st of the year next following.

Transfer of moose carcass

9 (1) Where a moose has been killed under the authority of a moose hunting licence and Section 7 has been complied with, the moose hunting licence holder may transfer not more than 15 pounds of moose meat to the occupants of another household who may possess the moose meat without a storage permit until July 31st of the year next following the kill of the moose.

Subsection 9(1) amended: O.I.C. 1999-366, N.S. Reg. 77/99.

(2) Where a moose has been killed, neither the moose hunting licence holder nor the companion licensee shall transfer more than 15 pounds of moose meat to the occupants of another household unless

(a) the Department is provided with one copy of the storage permit issued under Section 8 and the name and address of the person or persons who are to receive the moose meat and the number of pounds to be transferred to each person; and

Clause 9(2)(a) amended: O.I.C. 1999-366, N.S. Reg. 77/99.

the person who is to receive the moose meat is the holder of a storage permit issued by the Department which is valid until July 31st of the year next following the kill of the moose.

(4) No person shall possess more than 15 pounds of meat unless that person holds a valid storage permit issued by the Department.

(5) After July 31st of the year next following the kill of the moose, it shall be an offence for any person to possess moose meat without a valid storage permit issued by the Department.

(6) For purposes of subsections (1), (2) and (4), the possession of moose meat in any one household is limited to 15 pounds regardless of the number of occupants of a household.

Original subsection 9(6) repealed: O.I.C. 90-698, N.S. Reg. 151/90.

Subsection 9(6) added: O.I.C. 96-533, N.S. Reg. 123/96.

Pay particular attention to paragraphs 9(5) and 9(6).

Bob..I don't know what we'd do without you..!!!?? Thanks for the Info. I was completely unaware of the July 31st deadline...!!! I just assumed that less than 15 Lbs. was legal anytime...I'll have to let my friends know...I'm down to my last few pounds of game meat anyhow....Damn, I guess we'll have to eat beef on our hunt in Sept..!!!

I had picked up on the timeline aspect earlier...but I didn't want to say anything.
To me, anyways, it'd be pretty obvious that freeze-packed meat isn't from a recently shot moose, but it's one o' them things where the wardens have to draw the line somewhere...they can't be expected to rely on 'judgement' calls all the time...'cause when they stand before the judge, all he's interested in is the facts of law.

Personally?...the dateline miffs me, because I'm not one of those who scarfs down his venison right away...as a matter of fact, I'm eating beer-stewed steak as I type this...DAMN IT'S GOOD !!

Anywhooo...that's what she be...

I'm glad Markus pointed it out...it's one of those things that an innocent fella can get picked up on, unwittingly.

Had another great time in the highlands...!!! It's always intriguing visiting all of our old spots and exploring new ones. Over the years, we've established over half a dozen good hunting spots:...The Hidden Pond, The Rock, The Meadow, The Honey Hole, Don's Bog, The North Pond,etc... I was going to name this Summer's newly explored spot: the 'Horsefly Hell Hole'...but Pete insisted on naming it after me....His first choice was: 'David's Hole'...'Now, I said, surely you can come up with something a little more flattering..!!!??' So we settled on Dave's Barren...Hopefully, I'll live long enough to see one of my friends take one out of there...the signs are as good or better than any of our established spots...

To all you pancake lovers out there...if you like pancakes thick, light and fluffy (not flat and pasty),
LEAVE LUMPS IN YOU BATTER, Over mixing (store bought or homemade) is the biggest mistake that people make. Don't worry if you have small lumps of undissolved mix...they'll cook out and make you pancakes nice and light. Guaranteed..!!

We made deep fried potato skins to go with our moose roast and gravy...pretty good stuff...!!

I love to see your pictures on here David,really enjoy all of them and the write ups too!I would love to read a story like this just once without the armchair game wardens questioning the legality of everything they see.I think its getting old fast,just enjoy the pictures and stories,and stop questioning everyones ethics already....anyway,I can't wairt to see your fall hunting stories and pictures David!

Thanks Buck-Knife, I didn't take any offense at all to the observations and comments posted on this thread. If anything, I appreciated them. You can tell by the tone of a message if it's meant to be informative and helpful or just plain critical...and in this case I saw a genuine concern and I appreciated Bob's clarification. Sometimes it's the petty things that will get you in trouble, especially if you have jealous people around you that can't wait to bring you down.
Like Marcus, I've had that happen before...but it was unrelated to hunting and fishing.

It surely wasn't meant to be nit-picking...and I'm pretty sure on Markus' account, he wasn't either.
It's just one of them things a fella can get caught on.

I can understand where BUCK~KNIFE is coming from too.

That's why I initially held off on pointing it out.
I'm glad Markus did though...the wrong CO on the wrong day, could ruin a hunt pretty quick.

I know you weren't offended David,it just makes sense to me that if somebody was so concerned to ask about paperwork,maybe they should have done it in a pm,that seems more appropriate to me .I have noticed on this forum and the old one ,a couple always need to question somebodys ethics,maybe its right,maybe its wrong,i'm no C.O and don't play one on the internet,they would more likely be having a problem if they had fresh meat,a gut pile down the road ,and firearms with therm,than having some prepared meals with game meat in them..Maybe next time a pm would be in order,if anyone has a problem with that,pm me.LOL
