Recently looking at getting some new replacements of my " stuff " I regularly use on firearms for glass bedding...refinishing..etc. I almost hacked up a batch of new born kittens !!! WOWZERS !!!

First up...circa 1850. Bout 7 or 8 yrs ago, I bought a gallon at Kent ((well...3.68 liters))...39.99 plus taxes. So I was going to grab another gallon a few days ago....75.00 PLUS the frills !!!!!
WHAT THE ???/.....I ended up paying 24 and change for a small liter...946 mls !!
Mannn alive, glad there's still a bit of profit left over for corporate Irving!

Second go round...
I have a few of my rifles to restock and glass bed. Been using Devcon 10110 for probably 12-15 yrs on most jobs...some Brownells Acra Glass and Acra Glass Gel in between there too. Called Stellar Industries, company I dealt with for years for different things for the boat. I haven't bought a box of Devcon in 6-7 yrs. It was 46 bucks then for the 1 lb box / kit. Spoke to Tom yesterday I told him what I last paid and figured it'd be up some. Then he said, you're in luck...got 1 box left...then he said you sittin down...lol...why I said. He hits me with ...IT'S 110.00 BUCKS plus taxes now !!! Man...am I ever lucky !
I thanked him for his time and told him I'd get back to him in a day or two. Checked with Amazon, they have it...118.99 plus shipping(non prime) dayyyuuuummmm !!

Sooo, maybe I'll go the Acra Glass route. Did lots of rifles with it...never any issues. My last Acra Glass kit was 44 bucks...all in. Probably 4-5 yrs ago, come from Epps IIRC.
Called Basspro to see if they had any...I might just as well been talking to the vet about a breech birth pony !!!!
Looked around... Just checked with RustyWoods (my new goto place for some regular stuff I use)...79.00 (gel) and 75.00 (glass) bucks respectively !!!!!! plus the taxes and shipping of course.
Dang....am I really THAT out of touch on these and hundreds of other products ?? I realize companies have to make a profit, but do they have to make it all on the first guy thru the door ??
A day later and I'm still shaking the kittens out of my throat !!

I'm doing some work helping my wife's nephew with his rental unit. Yesterday I paid $30.99 plus tax for a litre of Seco latex paint to finish the trim!! A 3.78 litre can was $67.99! Normally I go for the large can because it is so much cheaper per litre but not at those prices!!!
Yesterday went for Nails , price last time 2 weeks ago was $3.29 lb for 3 1/2 Common Gal not Spiral Gal anywhere local , so picked 5 lbs , it came to $23 tax in , holy frig , Well yesterday finally had 3 1/2 spiral gal $4.89 lb said wtf , 25 lb box is $80 do the math in savings but still used to be $45 a box of 25 lbs

3 1/2 outdoor screws are now $7-8.85 per pound but a pre pkgd 1 pound box is $13 , look over and 10 lb box in reusable plastic tub is only $39 , how is that even possible , weighed the box was just over 11.7 pounds give plastic tub the extra weight . Still double price when sold loose
Yea I hate buying small packages of screws, nails, nuts & bolts, etcetera. You pay through the nose. I love a hardware store where I can buy by weight though because I can get just enough for what I'm working on at the time. I find I have less waste that way but if you've got multiple projects going or coming up, bulk us the way to go!

Best I have seen so far is the small plastic plug that you find on your car, holding the wheel well plastic on, plastic trim etc. Used them all the time. Went to get a pack of 10 the other day as that's how they usually came. The clerk says are you sure you want 10, I said what do you mean, he says they are now $10 each WTF View attachment 99861
Holy crap! I would have guessed a buck fifty each maybe!
Yes my brother told me that. This was a local store, but I noticed Napa and CT have marked theres up insanely also. I bet there made for 10 cents.
If that!! This is another example of price gouging as far as I'm concerned. Used to deal with a company in Ontario that did plastic mouldings for the auto industry. Given the tiny amount of resin required and relatively lax tolerances needed they could have produced these for cheap no problem.

I am trying to figure out why CT prices are sky rocketing. There quoted prices for stock is almost 3x now for the same at Walmart. I pretty well live a CT and see quite a change lately. I mentioned before we have two hardware stores side by side. The difference in price between the two on the same item can be considerable. It seems to me (like people selling guns) mark it up like crazy and some fool may buy it. Pretty well the logic I see in 2023
People crap on Walmart for a variety of reasons. But, no one complains about their prices being lower than most other places. They're a huge outfit and therefore can squeeze their suppliers for better pricing.
Of course, Canadian Tire is a pretty damm big organization too so you would think they could get good pricing for their suppliers too. Makes you wonder if they're price gouging. They may be trying to increase profits while blaming their suppliers and inflation?
There was actually a clip I watched about it on tv Their sales are down the last two quarters but their profits are not in line with the drop due to the higher pricing which is one way how they are trying to achieve their goals it was said
However it was also said they are stocked to the roof in many stores with what is classed as non essential items and there comes a time where the stock is costing more than the profit so to expect some huge sales this year ( they figured summer time ) on a lot of items vs carrying too much inventory any longer

At its Canadian Tire chain, comparable sales were flat in the quarter compared with the prior year as a sharp spending pullback on non-essential items like bikes and kayaks was tempered by strong automotive parts sales and service.

And right after the show this comes out so who do you believe
Actually their note about Q4 sales indicates that they were pretty much the same as their Q4 2021 so basically the same as the program you saw. Of course, they threw in additional comments to prove they had a hell of a good year! Of note is the fact that they had a record year, in spite of all those higher costs they cry about and have to pass on to consumers!!!! Price gouging is where its at boys!!!!

Pharmacy dispensing fees , So we after 26 yrs with Lawtons got tired of bad service when the long time Pharmacist retired , place went down hill , prior to the Mandemic , lost files , no renewals on file cannot find you in the system but yet When they did costs were going up every time , to a point of maximum amount under our plan .
Last renewal couple months ago for 4 prescrips was $40 , two for my self and two for my wife , prior to that it was a third in price

That's $10 each even recd letter from Manulife certain pharmacies charge more than others for dispensing fees . So after the last fiasco of lost prescrip renwal the doctor faxed in electronically and has to do it twice cause Lawtons were inept in getting it right , we went to Shoppers , well bracing for another $40 for our renewals went to the counter and our 4 prescrips were $24 total almost half price difference between 2 companies , Greed is part of the issue today with inflation , they use that word to cover up the max they can get away with to bolster profit margins
Check out Walmart and Super Store if they are near you. Shoppers was one of the higher priced places a few years ago.
Found this dated match of 2022 Know costco is the cheapest from just talking to my sister who uses them in halifax
Dispensing fees in Nova Scotia

As a guideline, consider the average cost of dispensing fees at the following major retail pharmacies:

  • Costco - $4.49
  • Walmart - $8.47
  • Superstore - $10.99
  • Lawtons - $12.39
  • Pharmachoice - $12.39
  • Pharmasave - $12.39
  • Shoppers Drug Mart - $12.39
We went from Shoppers to Super Store to Costco now for prescriptions.

I go to the eye doctor every 2 years. He asks me if I can see ok far away. I says yes. Apparently I need readers for the up close stuff. He says he can sell me a pair of readers, but that's not his style. Go buy yourself a pair of $1 readers from the Dollar Store, he says. He says that's all I need ... so that's what I did. Why anyone would pay a couple hundred bucks for a pair of readers is beyond me. +1.50 is all I need. He says a lot of places take advantage. He is not like that. Not saying a pair of readers that cost a buck would be for everyone, but most people that just need readers .... why spend that money when you don't have to.
I was using Dollar Store readers. Found they were always falling down my nose.
I buy them at Home Depot now. Only about $10 for two pair with 2 soft cases and the lenses seem better than the cheaper $ store ones.
I found that too, Tony! The Costco ones are better lenses as well and don't scratch up as easily.
Yep. Wore a pair of theirs for over a year. Nice clear lenses that didn't scratch easily.
Loblaws makes 529 million record profit in the last three months. Poor souls 😀
No they are not price gouging!!!!!!
I'd have more respect if they just came out and said "tough noggies, we're putting prices up cause Galen Weston told us to" rather than try to claim its because their costs went up.

Neighbor has a newer full size F150 Ford. He had the thought of going for the EV F150. They quoted him $140,000 and upwards depending on model. Really what people could afford that and if you could does it really make any sense. My wifes rich brother and wife bought a Tesla. They told us recently that there whole day is consumed (logistically) just to keep the dam thing charged. They are now back to using there gas driven vehicle.
My sister and her husband just bought a Mustang MachE. Full electric. Only 200 to 300 km range. I didn't ask what they paid for it but they got $10,000 off the sticker price so you know it was not cheap!! Of course, they still have a Ford F150 and a regular Mustang so the range on the electric MachE shouldn't be an issue.
I’m 99% sure the EV bs will fail. Pipe dream. Keep voting with your wallet keep buying gassers. Keep them running keep buying parts. Fk the ev bs. Once people start starving more and can’t make it to work because they can’t afford vehicles things will change back quickly. Right now certain losers are getting rich over trying to mandate this garbage and rich people with more money than brains are buying the EVs. The whole thing will collapse I’m positive. I never see EVs and when I do it’s some yahoo from the city. Maybe once a week or 2 I see one
You can't throw a dead cat here in HRM without hitting a Tesla now. So somebody is buying them. I think they're mainly a city vehicle for now though. I wouldn't want to strike out on a road trip in one.
Imagine financing a used EV at $149,000.warrantee running out.
You would have to have chit for brains!
I believe bots and trolls push the gates narrative to discredit conservatives since some think gates is behind it all. Makes for a good scapegoat and to make people seem crazy. No doubt he’s a useful idiot, he’s favoured China and the WEF. China is what you all should be worried about. Time going on will only prove that even more and more correct. I’ve been alarming China for the last 10 years, keeps getting worse and worse yet we still do business with commies.
I think you're right. There is a hell of a lot of muss information out there to stir people up and point them away from where they should really be looking!!!
China, Russia and, believe it or not, India are what the world needs to worry about for a few reasons.
Did you know that India is building a huge navy? They are. Countries with big navies often have tried pushing their weight around.
Has anyone noticed and it and it is rare but oddly some product prices never changed sine the pandemic. Bought some new switch plates. They are the same price as ten years ago?
I have noticed that too in a few cases.
The parasitic leach. Government only grows never gets smaller, how could government workers justify thinking themselves out of a job? Self interest. A thing socialist and do gooders and liberals can’t grasp
So here's a question for you. What is your proposal for running the country if government is tiny and doesn't collect tax?

I don't disagree that government is probably too big in some areas at least and definitely wastes money and can be corrupt.

But, I personally don't have a viable alternative to the existing system of running our country since our democracy, while far from perfect, is better/more equitable than the US system, a dictatorship or communism. Can you offer a solution?
Better than the US system? I don’t share that view with you. Privatization, gives consumers choice in the matter, when you have government run certain aspects of life, you only have one choice, don’t like the service? Too bad. Why do we pay the highest taxes in North America but need to wait 10 hours in a ER room?
“What about privatization monopoly?”
Well it’s our duty as citizens to make sure the government remains neutral and allows free market enterprise, once you let them in to allow regulation they pick and choose the winners and losers in business, obviously they can be paid off by the biggest company’s, so you don’t let them regulate everything into the ground in the first place.
“how can we make sure we get good/safe products?” Well if it’s in the interest of the buyer to have a safe product then you have a choice as a consumer to sought out such a product, which would make it in the businesses interest to make a safe cost effective product or service.
“What about building codes for example?”
Well if it’s in public interest to house you and your family in a safe structure, which most people want, it oughta be in the best interest in every contractor to do so, or their business would fail quickly, hire a private inspector etc.
Do what YOU want but don’t be mandating it for what YOU think is best for other people. In a true free enterprise society the institutions and services reflect what SOCIETY wants not what you YOU think they oughta want.
There are many things governments shouldn't get involved in I agree 100%.
Regulations regarding all aspects of public safety and health care though are areas that we as citizens (ie the government) need to control. Private enterprise simply cannot be relied upon to police themselves and put public health and safety above the almighty profit dollar. This has been proven many, many times and continues to be almost daily. Try getting sick in the US and see how fast you will be penniless or dead unless you have very deep pockets.
Apparently the majority of Canadians do want the institutions and services we have now or they would not exist. Governments only do what the majority of voters want them to so that they get voted back in. In the end every regulation is a response to public pressure after something bad hurt people.
I totally agree there is too much waste and outright stupidity in government. I just don't know how to fix it.
Like I said people don’t understand economics or human self interest so that’s why we’re at where we are now, not because it’s better than privatization, remember, governments create “problems” then come up with “solutions”, which make it worse and worse. You speak of government as if they are some kind of special type of human beings that don’t also have self interest? Ones with self interest that now control business and you cant do nothing about the bad service or avoid it. History just keeps repeating itself. Plenty of documentation where there is government intervention , prices always rise and there is less diversity of innovations.
government should have a very limited role, stop coercion and brute force from your fellow man, protect from foreigner threats etc.
A small example in a purchase and interest in safety could be something like: you buy a used car, you yourself don’t know too much about cars but you have a reputable mechanic that you trust, you take the car to him for a hoist inspection, therein you get your answer if it’s worth it and it safe. Private transaction, and society decides weather he is reputable or not by him simply having a good reputation and still being in business. Same could go for residential construction homes. There is no reason for homes in rural zoned areas to follow building codes. What about third party harm? I can see codes having a leg to stand on in something like say a condo building or if your so close to a neighbour, your home can collapse and hit theirs or their property etc.
I didn't mean my comment to sound as if government employees or politicians are any better, smarter, more reasonable or more honest than the rest of society. They're just like all the rest of us in some of the good and all of the bad ways possible!! All I meant was that "government" is simply the group of people that the citizens of whatever jurisdiction elect to run the joint.
As to building codes, doesn't matter city or deep in the woods. The codes are there to protect buyers from unscrupulous or stupid builders and, frankly, from themselves for that matter. Just because it hasn't fallen down yet does not mean its safe! But, like you obviously, I wouldn't sweat too much about a camp other than to make sure it wouldn't collapse and kill me!
As to mechanics. Well, I'd hope the public doesn't have to wait 15 years until there is a history of proof that Joe Blow mechanic hasn't got someone killed. That's why we have licensed tradesmen and professionals of all stripes. To protect the public.
I also agree that government should avoid subsidizing businesses in all but the rarest of cases. Business shouldn't go around with their hand out for government subsidies or give aways. They need to either sink or swim on their own IMO. But, how many times have you heard about this or that government intervention in different businesses around the country because they were trying to keep the local economy afloat. The voters asked for it in just about every case.
