Do you need a special permit to mount an owl?
Yes its a salvage permit . Free from DNR if its a roadkill. Have had accidental trap catches and will not give a permit for those. Stopped for 4-5 bird of prey over last year but they are hit to hard. Seems a few are in same area . Barred owls are very common here in NS.

Just to add IMHO keep those permits in a safe place as I found out some years after :( as long as you have the mount. I had a few owls and hawks done over the years and had to wait for them to inspect to make sure not shot but no problem to get a permit But had one die in the yard a few years ago a white snow owl and they came and took it and no way would they give me a permit no idea why All of mine were road kills and some should not have been done iMO this one was the grill of my 85 dodge in red islands and pretty ugly but was a mess the other not so bad plus some of them Yes rasorback Joe also collected and hoarded taxidermy in one of my lives :) and we would have been best friends :) and I would have taken a bit of work to you

My bird mounts are not the best but most times they are not the best specimens to start with . You come off a windshield at 100 kms Bound to be some feathers missing and broken bones.

For sure 90% of mine were done with the freeze dried?? method and james gardin?? in sackville did the rest the other normal way but he was a bird and fish man IMO and loved doing those

So client dropped off this small yote a couple months ago. Roadkill .
This has been a challenge since the start. Way to small for any commercial mount. So I did the next best thing bought a extra large fox form in a pose client liked. Poncing fox.
Fox form was 3 " shorter and 2" smaller in the chest. Good starting point to modify a form bigger I thought. Well it gets here and I wasnt thinking the legs would be shorter and feet smaller The eye to nose measurement was close and needed to adjust the body length NO WAY

So back to old fashion way of doing taxidermy . Make a body from an old box spring material.

Just happened to find this wrapped body from who knows when . Was the right length and just needed some added to get to proper size.

Next the head. Needed some high density form. A ha an extra pheasant body was the right size. Shape and cut and sand and shave til I got this.

But there was something wrong with it . The eyes holes didn't match up.
Start over how. While looking at a chart on what angles yote eyes are set to and I remember this from 30 years ago.A yote open mouth shoulder mount form I have bought .

Finally after 3 weeks I caught a red squirrel , now I can finish the owl mount. Oh BTW it was full of fleas all a sleep. As soon as the squirrels thawed it was panic time.
