Here you go bird lovers. Chickadees are my favourite bird for sure. Under appreciated and they punch above their weight class tough little guys that stick out the cold winter and keep beautiful background noise on the woods
This one I named “tim” lol. See the white spot on his rear right of his black cap? That’s how I know it’s him. I can be km or 2 out in woods he will visit me and land to see if I got seeds. He’s been around for 3 years now
Black capped chickadees ! Awesome little birds. I'll stick my apple core on a branch and watch em pick at it.
I know a couple of old bow hunters (RIP Huntwisely) who used to keep tossing a few seeds round their blinds and stands...kept the birds and squirrels that were close by more active, and natural...that kept the deer that were close by more relaxed.

Some great shots there! They are entertaining little guys for sure. I have a feeder in the backyard and they're here every day through the winter months. Also get nuthatches, junkos, olive sided flycatchers (I think), those damm morning doves, the odd blue jay and cardinals now and then.
I've had chickadees and both white and red breasted nuthatches land on my hand for seeds. Especially in the parks they get really tame. I've never had any luck with blue jays though.
That's a great idea ! Putting seeds around your stand. Never thought of it. Guess what I'll be doing next fall?
Nice clear pictures. What did you take them with if you don't mind me asking?
They are certainly very entertaining little guys. Always like seeing a flock of them move through the forest when I'm out.
here’s a chickadee that had just fledged it’s nest box and landed right at my feet, I sat the whole morning and watched all 5 take their first flights.
ever since the pileated woodpeckers nest tree blew down they’ve been trying to make a new nest in one of my favourite massive pine trees. I say try because i shoo them off from that tree, but they’ve made a couple holes big enough now the sawyer beetles will move in when spring hits, not doubt woodpeckers will be drawn to it even more then. Might half to cut this tree down.Almost 3foot diameter at the base.
Our little subdivision is mostly maple and poplar trees. Some of the poplars that are dying off is a magnet for these birds. We see them on a regular basis … but mostly only during the summer.
They like the mature mixed woods here I can see or hear them pretty much every day. They are a shy species so if there’s lots of vehicles moving around or people they tend to avoid that. I find them most active in the morning around 8-10AM.
I wish i could get them to come to my feeders like she does but i only get seem to get downies. Some are much smaller than others is that cause they are juvenielle?
Could be, the male pileated ones I see are visibly bigger than the female. I have downys as well but they’re more subtle about their business, they make a singular loud squeak/chirp when alarmed, no verbal calls like a pileated.
I remember sitting in a tree blind many years ago and having a pileated land on my shoulder. Dont know who was more surprised, him or me
