So, there’s about 5 weeks to go before the archery opener (if we’re allowed in the woods - WE NEED RAIN!!!). At this point, I start getting scent-conscious. I usually check my cams just before a decent rain but that isn’t happening in the near future. With that said, a few things are key to keeping the scent trail to a minimum. I ALWAYS wear rubber boots (the part of my body making the most contact with the woods) with my pants tucked in when walking through my hunting areas. I spray them liberally just before entering the woods. I’ll also spray my hands and the fronts of my pants - anything that’s going to contact the vegetation. Do the scent-masking/eliminating sprays work? I can tell you this - I’ve been within 20 yards of more deer when using them than not. Also, when walking through my access trails, I’ll give the trees a spray every so often so the deer get used to the smell. For the most part, I use Scent-A-Way Fresh Earth. Within the next couple of weeks, I’ll be hanging stands!

Sorry for the absence - new job has me busy busy BUSY! As such, I didn’t get a chance to follow my usual archery schedule of hanging sets and checking cams. I did scramble last week to get a set up at one of my usual spots and this morning it all came together. This 6 pointer came in 15 minutes after I got settled and offered a perfect broadside shot at 19 yards. I drilled him right in the engine room (shot looks forward but it wasn’t when he was standing) and he didn’t go 40 yards. He was in my butcher’s fridge within two hours. That’s gonna be dandy on the BBQ! Happy HAPPY!!
